About Schanze Nozawa Ski Lodge

Schanze Nozawa Ski Lodge in Nozawaonsen is just steps away from the main gondola station Nagasaka.

We feature 9 guest rooms. We have rooms which are traditional Japanese rooms with futons on tatami mats so that guests can truly enjoy a wonderful Japanese ski experience. Guests who are holidaying with their families may prefer the traditional Family Lofted Rooms, a duplex featuring separate sleeping area for the parents and kids. Guests who prefer the comfort of western beds will be pleased with the newly constructed Junior Studio and Family Studio (opened in season 20172018). We are also renovating the Junior Studio and Family Loft Studio (both with Attached Bathroom) to be completed for the 20182019 season opening. The rooms mentioned are western-styled with either private or attached bathroom. All Studios come with a kitchenette and resting area. Our Family Studio also comes with its own kitchenette, TV, dining, and an entertainment system to keep the kids busy.

For Winter season 2018, we will have new dryer, a new entrance to the -dry-room, plus 2 new room types!

The Perfect Location
Reviewed 24 February 2016
Stayed at Schanze for the second time in Feb 2016 and wow.. this place could not be more conveniently positioned.
I was here 5 nights this time and we chose to stay here as its only a 2 minute walk to the Nagasaka Gondola but still close enough to the town centre to sneak out for a good meal or a few drinks after a big day of snowboarding.
The closest bar is actually only 2 doors down the road and the closest onsen is 5 minutes away.
Rooms and shared washrooms were always clean and the lounge atmosphere was great. We met lots of fellow snowboarders & skiers.
Staff here are great and ensure that guests are well looked after although if you are vegan, your breakfast options are limited (bread & jams?)
Will definitely return here soon !!!!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the front entrance look out at the slopes.

Awesome location and great staff

We had the best time at the Schanze which made our trip to Nozawa just perfect! Ride in/out...we literally rode to the road out front! No time wasted getting up the mountain or home.
The staff were so friendly, helpful and happy so it was always a pleasure arriving back there. Brekkie was great...from pancakes to omelettes to cereals and toast.
Rooms were warm and cosy.

The main street is only a short and easy 5min walk so the nightlife and restaurants are really close! I would definitely recommend the Schanze and am intending on returning next February!

The pic attached is of the Gondola in the background and only about 10metres walk down to the Schanze...perfect

Great staff, service and easy access to Ski slopes

Nozawa Onsen is a beautiful town juxtaposed with beginner friendly ski slopes. Schanze Nozawa is located perfectly between both. We spent 4 nights at the lodge and enjoyed our experience.
Our room was decently sized and we had tatami mat flooring with futons for beds. The beddings were nice and thick, and we could rest well each night. There are also ample shower and bathroom facilities. Strong water pressure and hot water was available in the showers.
Each morning we had a wonderful breakfast available to us (bread, fruits, jam, cereal, coffee and fruit juices etc) and there was a varied option of daily cooked foods (like poached eggs, french toast etc). It was the perfect meal that kickstarted our day.
The staff were really friendly and helpful in giving us advice about all sorts of things, from which Onsen is recommended or which ski slopes were good for us to try out. We had a great time mostly due to their encouragement (to try out some slopes we were hesitant to at first).
We had a truly wonderful time and would love to return to Schanze Nozawa again soon.
Room is traditional tatami and futon, which is so warm and cosy. You will have to share a common bathroom (as with all the inns in Nozawa), but there are so many onsens to enjoy that I didn't even use it once.
The owner and staff speak fluent English, so didn't have to struggle to get information and tips on the local scene. Do book in advance though as the inn is small and they get fully booked during the peak season.
One last tip: do get the hotel staff to help you make reservation for dinner as the restaurants are small and we didn't manage to try out the popular ones.

Best view & location

This is the nearest inn to the gondola station, which is really convenient as you don't have to lug your equipments up the steep slopes from the main street where all the other inns are. But the best part of the location is the awesome view of the ski slopes from your room.

Amazing staff

Jack and Hannah were fantastic hosts, they made the entire trip easy with good advice about the best spots locally and were super helpful the whole time. The place is also in a really good location to the main gondola for skiing. Everything was clean and the food they provided for breakfast was really convenient in the mornings before skiing. Although some of the shared areas and bathrooms could get quite crowded at certain times of the day.

Loved our stay!

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Schanze. Nozawa is an amazing ski resort-beautiful, deep snow with powder. On arrival, we enjoyed the hospitality & local knowledge of Eugene. He recommended and showed us on a map various places we could eat dinner (or lunch), the different types of onsen and how they work. Eugene continued to give us friendly advice and provide support during our stay (and cooked up some local specialities one evening-mmm!) We enjoyed meeting other guests in the common lounge/breakfast dining areas. Breakfast was ample with a variety of foods.Kelvin too was most helpful.
We were happy with our traditional room which overlooked the ski slopes and ski jump.
Overall a fantastic experience!
