nozawa onsen snow mountains

Number 1. The Mountains of course!

Japan is a world-famous, some say the best ski location in the world, because every year we receive abundant snowfall during winter. The magnificent ski area in Nozawa Onsen is one of the largest in Japan covering about 298 hectares with 50 runs suitable for all levels. Snowboarders and skiers need not worry that they will not find a suitable run. (About 40% of the slopes are suited for beginners)

Number 2. Enjoy the Onsens

Where else can you find onsens all over the village (even free ones) to have a nice soak and bath after a day of snowboarding and skiing? Nozawa Onsen features 13 free onsens all over the village and there are a few paid ones which are also very affordable to visit where you will have more facilities for use. Don’t forget to try cooking some onsen eggs.

Number 4. To join in the Dosojin Fire Festival in Nozawa Onsen

The famous Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival is nationally designated as an important intangible folk cultural property. It originally began as an invocation for a good harvest, health and good fortune in the coming year, but has been expanded to include a good ski season as well. Taking place on January 15th every year, the festival is staged by men aged 42 and 25 (so-called “unlucky ages”) to celebrate the birth of a family’s first child, to dispel evil spirits and also to pray for happy marriage.
